Dana Group Associates specialize in providing interactive psycho-educational groups focused on Social Skills Development. This group program is designed for children from pre-school age to late adolescence, addressing both social and emotional concerns in a safe, supportive and structured environment. These programs are scheduled during the school year and in the summer. DGA Social Skills Groups run for 10 to 12 weeks, beginning in September, January and June. Typically, the group brings children and adolescents with an approximately two-year age span together once a week for sixty minutes.

Our Pscyho-Educational Social Skills Group is ideal for children and adolescents who have difficulty with self-esteem, attention span, impulse control, body concept and motivation. Children are given the opportunity to strengthen their social, pragmatic, expressive language and conflict resolution skills. Our groups benefit children with language-based and/or non-verbal learning style differences as well.

The Social Skill Development Program focuses on Pragmatic Social Skills and includes but are not limited to:

  • Taking social initiative
  • Social entry skills
  • Relationship maintenance skills
  • Listening skills
  • Pragmatic language skills
  • Conflict resolution skills
  • Reading non-verbal cues:
    • Increasing awareness of facial expressions, body language and tone of voice
  • Assertiveness skills
  • Respecting appropriate physical boundaries
  • Responding to teasing and bullying

The group experience begins with direct social skills teaching. During each session, there is a combination of direct social skills teaching, cooperative play, and interactive experiences. Children participate in focused discussions and role playing that target Pragmatic Social Skills. They develop useful and generalizable interpersonal skills; friendship making and keeping skills, furthering effective relationships in family, school and community settings.

STRESS MANAGEMENT-FOR-TEENS GROUP

Dana Group Associates, under the direction of Denise Ewald, LICSW, now offers Stress Management-for-Teens groups specifically geared to help teens manage their stress in effective and positive ways. Ms. Ewald has an extensive background working with teens in both regular and special education settings, and in alternative high schools as well as public schools. She has worked with adolescents, families, and teachers, assessing and treating school-related adjustment issues involving social skills, self-esteem, anxiety and education.

Dana Group believes there is a growing need for teaching Stress Management strategies to teens. Adolescents don't always know the best coping skills to utilize under stressful conditions. Today, more than at any other time, children are inundated with pressures that they feel are insurmountable. These pressures can lead to behaviors that often make matters worse. In response to these needs, participants will learn skills and strategies to help manage their thoughts, feelings and behaviors when faced with stress, anxiety, and/or difficult situations in their lives. These life stressors may include, but are no limited to school, friends, family and relationships in general. Through group work, teens will develop a better understanding of what it means to be 'mindful' and how to benefit from applying mindfulness skills and strategies to their daily lives; to be effective in school, home and outside the group.
