Music Therapy

Discover the therapeutic benefits of self-expression and connection through music with music therapy in Massachusetts. 

Music therapy is an evidence-based treatment option for a wide range of mental health conditions. Through listening to, playing, or composing music, participants can explore new ways to express emotion, release stress, boost their mood, and connect with others. 

Music therapy at Dana Group can complement talk therapy and is offered as individual music therapy session or in a weekly music therapy group. Anyone can be a music therapy, and there is no skill requirement to join.

Individual Music Therapy Sessions

Music has many proven and powerful benefits for encouraging self-reflection and providing an outlet to cope with stress, depression, and other difficult emotions. Individual music therapy include one-on-one sessions with your experienced music therapist. These sessions are customized to your needs and support your overall mental health treatment plan, which may include talk therapy and/or medication management.

Young Adult Support/Social Music Therapy Group (ages 18-30)

This group is for young adults(18-30) looking for a supportive environment that promotes personal growth and understanding. This group will meet on Tuesday at 5 pm. The focus of the group is self-expression, social skills, and support. Many people identify themselves through their music. This group will explore individuality and self-expression with support by the group. Group participants will experience musical improvisations (with various instruments), songwriting, song sharing, and mindful personal discussion.

Young Adult Music Therapy Support/Social Group Curriculum

Week 1: Intro to music therapy- introduction to music therapy, musical instruments, and group members

Week 2: Mindfulness- musical experience with mindfulness, and guided meditation

Week 3: Identifying emotions through music

Week 4: Social anxiety- coping with anxiety during self-expression

Week 5: Communication and working with a group- communicating through making music

Week 6: Self-expression- expressing emotions through making music

Week 7: Self-expression and Identity through musical identity

Week 8: Support- feeling support through making music collectively and through individual expression

Week 9: Teamwork- working together to create a group song

Week 10: Growth- a recap of skills learned, sharing the musical story for the participants and as a group

Trauma Music Therapy Group (ages 26 and up)

This group is for adults (26-up) that are looking for creating a supportive, non-judgmental environment promoting personal healing. This group will meet on Tuesday at 6 pm. Music can have different meanings for each individual. This group will focus on the personal meaning of music through a collective group experience. This group will focus on self-expression, grounding, and support. Participants will take part in musical improvisations (with various instruments), songwriting, recreating songs with musical instruments and voice, song sharing, and mindful personal discussion.

Trauma Music Therapy Group Curriculum 

Week 1: Intro to music therapy- introduction to music therapy, musical instruments, and group members

Week 9: Support- feeling support through making music collectively and through individual expression

Week 10: Resiliency- Progress and the journey forward with music
